25/06/2018 – RJR News. / Uruguay secured Group ‘A’ honours at the Russia World Cup finals following their 3-0 trouncing of host nation Russia in the top-of-the-table clash on Monday. Russia had enjoyed an impressive start to the tournament with two wins from as many games but they went behind in their final group match after only 10 minutes when Luis Suarez drilled in a clever low free-kick. It got worse for the home side when a Diego Laxalt effort from 25 yards was deflected in by Denis Cheryshev.
Russia ended with ten players after the sending off of defender Igor Smolnikov who picked up a second yellow card and was sent off 35 minutes into his World Cup debut. Edinson Cavani put several earlier misses behind him to get his first goal of the tournament by stabbing in from close range to complete the 3-0 win. In the day’s dead rubber Saudi Arabia got their first win of the tournament with a 2 – 1 over Egypt.
