Symphony meets Swing at Queen’s Hall - EntornoInteligente / News day / The Trinidad and Tobago Youth Philharmonic (TT YP) will hosts “Ivory and Ebony — Symphony Meets Swing” at Queen’s Hall tomorrow and Sunday at 7.30 pm and 5.30 pm respectively.

The concerts will be the culmination of SACOTT YP’s 12th annual, three-week music workshop which saw approximately 200 string, woodwind, brass, and percussion students, ages four to 24, complete 90 contact hours of training. The workshop was supervised by a team of Venezuelan tutors of FESNOJIV (El Systema of Venezuela), led by Heemath Jahoor and TT YP’s music director, Kenneth Listhrop.

The repertoire for the first part of the event will include symphonic works by Beethoven, Aaron Copland and Camille Saint Saens, while the second part promises some surprises celebrating the music of Frank Sinatra, Nat and Natalie King Cole, big band, bossa nova, and much more, by the TT YP, said a media release.

SACOTT YP’s school and community programmes continue to embrace students from the Arima West Government Primary School; the University School, St Augustine; St George’s College, Barataria; the Bishop Anstey High School East and Trinity College East, Trincity, and Atwell’s Educational Institute, Tacarigua.

Additionally, SACOTT YP continues to recognise and applaud the generosity of the corporate community such as the National Gas Company and Atlantic as well as the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts for its contribution, the release said.

The Banker’s Association of Trinidad and Tobago’s award to the orchestra will help to provide additional instruments to the youth as well as the participation of students from the Belize National Youth Orchestra from Belize, courtesy the Belize Bank Ltd and students from Mark of Excellence School of Music from Tobago courtesy the ministry and the Tobago House of Assembly, the release said. SACOTT YP is urging music teachers, students, schools, churches and the general public to support the youth as it builds an orchestral tradition.
