23/06/2018 – Curacao Chronicle. / WILLEMSTAD – Anyone who believes that he or she has been a victim of a criminal offense must immediately report this to the police. Only the police can conduct investigations and arrest suspects. Unfortunately, a minor victim has decided to go to the press and give explanations about what happened to her. This is a possible sexual abuse case against a minor.
The special prosecutor of the Public Prosecution (OM) in Curaçao responsible for sex offenses regretted that the minor had received airtime on the TV station to tell her story. She had to be advised to go to the police and file a report. Statements in the media can seriously damage the further investigation, especially when the perpetrators are in the picture and also hear the statements. The Public Prosecutor hopes that in the future the press will handle such sensitive matters more carefully.
