Roberto Pocaterra Pocaterra || Beck ||// Is this a 'floating island'? - EntornoInteligente

Entornointeligente.com / The “floating island” spotted off Icacos, Cedros on Thursday is actually a mat of floating vegetation that was likely expelled from one of the major rivers in Venezuela.

Floating mats of aquatic plants are often seen in the Columbus Channel, the passage between Icacos Point on the southwestern top of Trinidad and the marshlands of Venezuela.

Dozens of people took fishing boats out to the ‘island’ and were able to ‘land’ on the mass.

Similar vegetation washes ashore along much of Trinidad’s south coast and sometimes the east coast depending on the strength and direction of the currents.
