Phillip sets national record in Belarus - EntornoInteligente / The trinidad Guardian / The local trio of Njisane Phillip, Nicholas Paul and Kwesi Browne combined to set a new national record in the qualification round of the men’s Team Sprint event when the fourth leg of the Tissot UCI Track Cycling Fifth World Cup pedaled off at the Minsk-Arena Velodrome, Minsk, Belarus, yesterday.

First of the 12 competing teams to take to the track in the event T&T began with its most experienced cyclist in 2013 UCI World Cup Sprint silver medallist Phillip and after a somewhat slow start at the 125m mark he increased his speed considerably to push ahead with a split of 17.540 seconds at the end of his 250m distance.

Paul, a former Junior Pan American Sprint champion then maintained T&T’s position with a 13.087 split for a total time of 30.627 at the 500m mark, but on they final leg.

A 2014 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games and 2016 Pan American Track Cycling bronze winner, Browne tried his best to keep up the momentum and despite his best of 14.026 seconds, the trio had to settle for eighth fastest overall from the 12 participating teams with a combined effort of 44.653 seconds over the 750m distance.

The top qualifiers were Holland’s Beat Cycling Club in 43.850 ahead of France (44.042), Poland (44.182), Russia (44.280), Minsk Cycling Club (44.359), Germany (44.457) and Korea Republic (44.560).

Today when competition with Team Sprint quarterfinals, the T&T team which also include Keron Bramble will face off against Beat Cycling Club trio of Theo Bos, Matthijs Buchli and Roy Van De Berg in the fourth and final heat.

The three other heats will feature Russia versus Minsk Cycling Club, Poland against Germany while France faces off with Korea Republic.

The T&T pair of Phillip and Paul will also face the starter in the Individual Sprint today while Paul competes in the Keirin tomorrow.
