Professor Archibald McDonald, Chairman of the Cornwall Regional Hospital Independent Oversight Committee, has cautioned the Parliamentary Opposition against politicising the rehabilitation work at the facility.   Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Morais Guy has said poor planning resulted in the four missed deadlines to complete the work.   On Monday, Dr. Guy further stated the delay in the completion of  repairs will affect the treatment of dengue, as well as cases of hand, foot and mouth disease in the western region.   However, Professor McDonald has said work to fix the air quality problem at Cornwall Regional started in 2017 after the source was identified as mold.   He said much time was lost trying to identify the source.   Speaking Tuesday on The Morning Agenda on Power 106, Professor McDonald called for patience as the work progresses.   “I know Dr. Guy and I would beg him…not to politicise this. It’s not about politics. This is about health care,” he insisted. “Cornwall Regional is important not just to western Jamaica, but to the entire health care system in Jamaica and it will be restored but we have to take the time…to get it done as quickly as possible. But what we don’t want is to open that tower and to have people getting sick in there again,” he urged.                                                                                                                         Professor McDonald said he is prepared to accept a further cost overrun on the Cornwall Regional rehabilitation project, once the work is done right.    The work is now projected to cost between $3.8 and $4 billion.   The previous budget was $3.5 billion.
