LETTER OF THE DAY - MoBay police need help - EntornoInteligente

Entornointeligente.com / Jamaica Gleaner / THE EDITOR, Sir: I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Mayor of Montego Bay, His Worship Glendon Harris, and the St James Parish Council for successfully and efficiently hosting that wonderful Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay, recently. The ceremony was well organised and came off exceptionally well.

In his speech, Mayor Harris urged residents of St James to unite in the fight against crime and ensure that we do so in an honest, practical and honourable manner.

The city of Montego Bay is currently experiencing a gargantuan problem with crime, and the police require the full support of the residents to be able to successfully tackle this problem which has claimed the lives of hundreds of Jamaicans this year.

The mayor has demonstrated that the parish council is concerned about the crime problem and will be working with the police to address the issue, which has been negatively affecting the business community for some time now.

Because of the crime problem, some business operators are being forced to close their operations early during weekdays, and this situation has been of much concern for the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the past two years.

The police in St James must be given additional resources to ensure that they can more aggressively tackle this problem.

I implore the hard-working, dedicated National Security Minister, Peter Bunting, to allocate more resources and equipment to the St James police and, by extension, the Area One Police, which covers the parishes of St James, Westmoreland, Trelawny, Hanover, and St Elizabeth.

Area One recently received a new head, Assistant Commissioner Paul Ferguson, who is a highly experienced veteran of the police force, and I take this occasion to widely and unreservedly commend him on his new assignment and wish him all the success in the new senior law enforcement position.
