“American Idol” fans haven’t seen a moment like this in — if you can believe it — 17 years.
Kelly Clarkson , the winner of the first season of the groundbreaking singing competition in 2002, has come a long way since living out of her car before her “Idol” audition at age 20. The three-time Grammy Award-winner is now the host of her own talk show, “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” And she celebrated her second week of shows with the trio who helped launch her to stardom: former “American Idol” judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.
“I would have never thought that show would have had the impact,” said Clarkson, now 37. “I mean look at what it did: the domino effect was crazy.”
Cowell, 59, said he didn’t think he and the other judges would “be sitting here today” had Clarkson not auditioned that year.
“The whole premise of the show was we had to find a star who was going to sell records,” he said. “We found some great people that whole year, but when you delivered that moment on that first live show and when you sang that winning song at the end …”
Kelly Clarkson sings More Abdul, 57, interjected, referencing Clarkson’s iconic “A Moment Like This” performance: “It was a game changer.”
Jackson, 63, recalled a big payoff during the season 1 finale. “Wow, this is really going to work,” he remembered thinking at the time.

And though it’s been years since the famous trio has sat on a judging panel together, they’ve still got the banter.
Jackson was struggling to remember an “older woman on ‘America’s Got Talent'” who had given an “unbelievable” performance recently. “She’s like 60 years old or something. She’s ridiculously good, Simon.”
Cowell jumped in with the answer: “That was Paula (Abdul) at the VMAs,” he quipped. (Abdul last performed at the Video Music Awards in 2017, but sang at the Billboard Music Awards this year.)
