The Joint Select Committeeof Parliament reviewing the proposal for Portmore to be the 15th parish held its first meeting on Wednesday. There were differing views among committee members over the municipality getting parish status. St. Catherine South Member of Parliament Fitz Jackson was among those who raised concerns. He noted that, while the meeting to discuss the possible change was a “worthwhile unavoidable exercise,” the people of Portmore must be shown respect and consulted as “it is their views that must be central to all decisions that will affect them.” St. Catherine South East Member of Parliament Robert Miller urged members of the committee to participate in the discussion with an open mind. “Consultation has taken place and will take place and persons will be engaged. So some of the questions that I’m hearing from some of my colleagues, it boils (down) to the point of our limited capacity in terms of we crafting a position as to what we personally want for Portmore and not waiting until we hear from those persons that we’re gonna consult and to see how best we can enhance the lives of the citizens of Portmore,” he asserted.
