JAMAICA: PAAC orders investigation into toll increase due to 'coin shortage' - EntornoInteligente

Entornointeligente.com / Jamaica Gleaner / The Public Administration and Appropriations Committee of Parliament (PAAC) has directed the state-run National Road Operating and Constructing Company (NROCC) to investigate claims that the temporary toll increase on the North-South Highway is due to a coin shortage.

PAAC Chairman, Dr Wykeham McNeill, says clarity is needed on the matter to mitigate against any loss of public trust in the work of the Government.

Over two week ago, the Transport Ministry told the public that it approved a temporary adjustment in toll rates on the highway because the operators did not have enough coins to give change to motorists.

According to the Ministry, the shortage of coins in circulation was confirmed by the Bank of Jamaica as well as commercial banks.

However, the Central Bank rejected the claim.

PAAC member Fitz Jackson told the committee last week that the situation needs urgent clarification.
