JAMAICA: Jovan East aiming high - EntornoInteligente

Entornointeligente.com / Jamaica Gleaner / The 22 year-old managed a paltry six goals last season but has already doubled that tally with 13 strikes so far in the 2017-18 season. With nine rounds of matches left to be played before the play-offs he in is contention to be crowned the league’s most lethal striker.

The striker explained that last season was poor for him because he was not doing the right things and the change in fortune this season is down to learning from last season and putting effort in doing the right things.

“Last year I started poorly and finished poorly. I was not doing the right things. This year the difference is that I am working on my finishing day in and day out. Every day at training I put in the work.”

The Portmore marksman also stated that last year he had a lengthy vacation in the United States and returned to training late. He decided to cut his vacation short this year, hit the ground running on the training front and he is now reaping the rewards of his choice and effort in training. He is only two goals off of topping the goal scoring charts.

Overseas plans

East has plans to ply his trade away from the shores of Jamaica as well as to become a regular part of the national set up.

“My plan really is to get myself playing professionally overseas and to represent my country. I think I am on my way but I need to do a little more to get me where I need to be. People have been encouraging, telling me to keep working hard as there are better days ahead,” he said.

Now having made his debut for the national team the young striker insists his main focus is on improving himself and the rest will follow naturally.

“While I want to be a part of the national set-up I am not necessarily focused on that. I am focused on my team and the job that I have to do with this club. I have to deliver on the field and once I do that what is to come will come.”

While having eyes on playing abroad, East is aware that leagues such as the English Premier League are not a possibility due to Jamaica’s current FIFA rankings but he is willing to pursue playing in other leagues.

“Europe is where I want to be really so I am looking to anywhere that our national ranking would not be prevent me from going.”
