Entornointeligente.com / Jamaica Gleaner / Thomas Ades’s The Exterminating Angel was seen live on more than 900 screens last Saturday. An estimated additional 46,000 people saw it live on 800 screens in 37 countries in Europe, 11 countries in Latin America, Russia, Egypt, Israel, Jamaica and Morocco.
Sunday’s encore showing is at the Palace Cineplex.
Inspired by the classic Luis Bunuel film of the same name, The Exterminating Angel is a surreal fantasy about a dinner party from which the guests can’t escape. The production was directed by Tom Cairns, who wrote the libretto, and Ades conducted his own score.
Thomas Ades is dubbed the foremost composer of modern times. He conducts his adventurous new opera, with the intention of bringing the cumulative power of theatre and music to the Metropolitan Opera.
The cast members include Audrey Luna, Amanda Echalaz, Sally Matthews, Sophie Bevan, Alice Coote, Christine Rice, Joseph Kaiser, Frederic Antoun, David Portillo, David Adam Moore, Rod Gilfry, Kevin Burdette, Christian Van Horn, John Tomlinson and Iestyn Davies.
The set and costume are designed by Hildegard Bechtler, lighting is by Jon Clark, projections by Tal Yarden and choreography by Amir Hosseinpour.
The Exterminating Angel was the third of 10 live transmissions to be shown this season. The next transmission will be Sir David McVicar’s new production of Puccini’s Tosca , on January 27, 2018. Led by music director Emeritus James Levine, the production stars Sonya Yoncheva in the titular role, Vittorio Grigolo as Cavaradossi and Sir Bryn Terfel as Scarpia.
