Entornointeligente.com / Jamaica Gleaner / Two local track and field coaches believe Jamaica has performed to expectation thus far at the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, and they name new sprint queen Elaine Thompson as the team’s top performer at the Games.
However, discus thrower Fedrick Dacres was the biggest disappointment for the coaches. who anticipated him at least making the final.
Edwin Allen High’s female coach, Michael Dyke, says what the team has accomplished with two days to go is no surprise.
“I am impressed with the track overall, but in terms of the field, we are still a bit behind in the throws and the jumps, but based on what I looked at, I haven’t seen any surprises,” he told The Gleaner .
Dyke says Omar McLeod and Usain Bolt’s performances were phenomenal, but he rates female double-sprint champion Elaine Thompson as the top performer for the country at the Games.
“Undoubtedly, Elaine [is top performer] – at her first Olympics and she got two individual gold medals,” he stated.
His biggest disappointment came in the field, where thrower Dacres, missed out on a place in the final.
“I was really anticipating him making the final and getting a medal, based on what he has done coming up through the junior ranks, but I learned he was carrying an injury,” he said. “But they (team) have lived up to expectation, as I am expecting about 11 medals, and at this point, we are on course,” he added..
Excelsior High coach David Riley also believes things have gone according to plan on the track.
“We are a track and field nation, and it’s good to be participating, have good representation, compete, and come away with medals … and they have been competing and are getting the rewards,” he commented..
“So far, Thompson is, undoubtedly, the top performer. The only person I have to medal that didn’t was Yohan Blake in the men’s 100 metres, everything else has played out how I anticipated it.
“My biggest disappointment is Dacres not making the final. I had high expectation, but I hadn’t heard he’d picked up an injury,” he noted.
