Patiala: The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) on Sunday fired up seven units of the two state-owned thermal power plants at Ropar and Lehra Mohabbat as the demand for power, which had come down to 6,235 MW on Saturday after showers in Amritsar and adjoining areas, shot up to 10,701 MW on Sunday. While the independent power producers, including Rajpura and Goindwal thermal plants that have two units each, were operating to full capacity, the Talwandi Sabo power plant was running two of its three units on Sunday. The two units at the Rajpura thermal power plant of 700 MW megawatt capacity are generating 1,322 MW, and the two units of 660 MW capacity each at Talwandi Sabo are contributing 864 MW. The two units at Goindwal of 270 MW each were chipping in 311 MW of electricity. The state government fired up three units at the Ropar thermal power plant, which are contributing 466 MW. The four units at Lehra Mohabbat are producing 638 MW of power to meet the state’s demand. The state is also getting 691 MW power from hydro projects, which includes 296 MW power from Ranjit Sagar project. Besides, the state has also been getting around 400 MW of solar power. The total power available to PSPCL from its own sources stands at 4,418 MW while the rest is being arranged through banking arrangements with southern states and is also being bought from the open exchange. On Sunday evening, against a schedule of 6,370 MW, the state was drawing 6,382 MW of power to meet the states increase demand. While the PSPCL has put on record that it has made arrangements to meet the demand up to 14,000 MW during the current summer season, as per an estimate the power demand is likely to cross 15,000 MW. PSPCL chairman-cum-managing director Baldev Sran said the power utility was providing uninterrupted power to all categories of consumers across the state while ensuring eight hours of power supply to agricultural connections in the state.
