Entornointeligente.com / The governing Jamaica Labour Party has confirmed that Enid Bennett, former Member of Parliament for Central St Catherine and later West Central St Catherine is dead.

Bennett died last night after a brief illness.

Bennett, a longstanding member of the Jamaica Labour Party, was MP from 1967 to 1997.

A stalwart in Jamaica’s political history, Bennett holds the record as the first female to be elected consecutively to the House of Representatives for three decades. She also has the enviable record of being the first female in any political party in independent Jamaica to be elected deputy leader.

She also served as a minister in the administration of Prime Minister Edward Seaga in the 1980s.

From a branch representative to constituency secretary to councillor and then Member of Parliament, Bennett has spent most of her life serving her country.

In paying tribute to Bennett, sitting MP for West Central St Catherine, Dr Christopher Tufton, said the people of the constituency will always be grateful for her presence and her contribution.

?I will always be grateful for your counsel and encouragement,? said Tufton.
