PHNOM PENH, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Four Cambodian immigration police officers were killed after a rear-end collision on National Road 33 in southwestern Kampot province early Monday, the National Police said.

The fatal crash occurred at 3:00 a.m. local time when a Toyota Highlander, carrying a total of five immigration police officers, crashed into the back of a semi-truck trailer loaded with cement, the police said on its website.

“Four immigration police officers were pronounced dead and one other was seriously injured in the accident,” the police said, adding that the victims worked at the Prek Chak international border checkpoint.

Darkness and no lights on the back of the trailer were blamed for the accident, the Police said, adding that the truck’s driver fled the scene.

Death toll from road traffic accidents remains high in Cambodia. In the first six months of 2019, a total of 1,033 people were killed and 3,224 others were injured in road crashes across the country, according to a government report.
