Jaisalmer: The 160MW third unit of gas-based power project in Ramgarh area of Jaisalmer is lying closed for last nine months as gas is not being supplied to it. As a result, the government is suffering huge losses. Reportedly, the gas well at Shahgarh Bulj developed some technical snag due to which gas is not being supplied to the thermal power project. The company is asking for higher rates for gas supply which sparked a dispute. The foundation stone of the project was laid by then chief minister Ashok Gehlot in 2013. The machinery worth Rs 300 crore was ordered, which is lying idle for six years. Ramgarh thermal power project’s chief engineer B Kumar said that there were three units of this project, of which only units I and II are running currently. The two units have combined capacity of 110MW, which are generating 90MW power. However, power generation in the third unit with 160MW capacity is stalled since last December. Earlier, Focus Energy through GAIL India was supplying 9.50 lakh cubic metre gas for the project. But since December, the company is only supplying 2 lakh cubic metre gas which is being used in units I and II. “The company had assured to supply 9.50 lakh cubic metre gas for all the three units, but possibly there is some technical problem in the oil wells and gas has been exhausted in some wells due to which only 2 lakh cubic metre gas is being supplied, forcing the third unit to shut down. As a result, the government had to incur heavy revenue loss,” said Shailesh Sadawat, superintendent engineer of the project. He said the company presently is selling gas for $5 to GAIL, which has demanded to increase the rates.
