Trinidad Express / Three men arrested on Saturday after blocking the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, Maloney Gardens, with burning debris, have pleaded guilty to obstruction of a roadway.
Joseph White 40, a labourer, of Apartment 1-2 North Building; Vince Gibson 31, a newspaper dispatcher, of Apartment 4-3 Building 4 and Kuamie John, 28, a cook, of Apartment 1-2, North Building 7, appeared in the Arima Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
They were each fined $150 by Magistrate Debby Ann Bassaw.
The three were arrested after police had to be called out in response to reports of a fiery protest, which posed a safety risk to motorists who were forced drive over the concrete median.
The three defendants were part of a group of about 65 residents from the area, who blocked a portion of the highway with burning tyres and other debris, between 9a.m. and noon to highlight their dissatisfaction over a lack of a pipe borne water supply.
In a statement on Tuesday, the police service says it is intent on prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law, persons who obstruct and disrupt the free flow of traffic on the nation’s roadways in anyway.
