Trinidad Express / A TEENAGE husband who kicked and cuffed his wife of one year, has been sent to anger management classes and Alcoholics Anonymous sessions.
The magistrate also ordered that Arvin Gokool stay away from the alleged victim who was left with bruises on her face.
Gokool of San Fernando was charged with assault by beating.
Last Tuesday he told the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court he was guilty of the offence.
Police prosecutor Sgt Krishan Bedassie said it was on Friday night that Gokool cuffed and kicked the woman.
He also beat her with the handle of a mop.
The victim was treated at the San Fernando General Hospital.
Gokool was charged by constable Sandy.
Police prosecutor Krishna Bedassie told the court that Gokool had been convicted in the past for larceny of a dwelling house.
He was also previously charged with possession of marijuana.
Gokool had four pending matters, Bedassie said.
He told the court that he was skilled in fabrication and welding and was soon to further his education in the field.
He said he and the 21-year-old were together for the past year and lived at his parents’ home.
“You all are so young…I don’t know if sending you to prison will serve any useful purpose. You need help,” Magistrate Gloria Jasmath said.
Gokool admitted that he used illegal drugs in the past and for three years he had been using alcohol.
Jasmath told him this had to change as she placed him on $25,000 surety bail.
Anger management, AA sessions
She told him he needed to attend Alcoholics Anonymous sessions and to begin this Sunday.
Gokool is to provide proof of his attendance to the court.
He was also told to visit the National Family Services for anger management sessions.
“I am doing all this because of your age. I think you need help,” the magistrate said.
She also ordered that Gokool stay 150 metres away from the alleged victim, including her residence, place of work and “wherever she will be”.
He was warned that should he breach these conditions, his bail will be revoked.
The victim who was present for the matters has been staying with her parents.
Gokool will return to court on May 31.
