Trinidad Express / THE Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) has called on Finance Minister Colm Imbert to reconsider thoughts of preferential allocations of foreign exchange, saying yesterday such “favouritism” could have disastrous economic consequences for Trinidad and Tobago.
The association, via media statement, suggested that Government instead consider “a more realistic rate of exchange for the T&T dollar”.
Imbert last Thursday announced that consideration was being given to priority access to forex to ease a drain on the resource but the proposal received mixed reviews from economists and the business community, some of whom warned that it could give rise to a regime of exchange controls.
