News day / The game was a lot closer than what the scoreline reflected, as all the sets were keenly contested.
The first set was even for most parts but St Augustine held their nerves to win some crucial points in the end giving them the 25-22 set victory. The Trinidad campus started the second set more aggressive and purposeful as they took an early 10-3 lead forcing Cave Hill to take a time-out. Momentum was then shifted as Cave Hill had nine straight points and kept building on their lead as the set progressed.
Only needing one point to win the set the host campus stumbled at 24-19 allowing St Augustine the chance to fight back. Aided by good servicing from Lee Leon and clinical spiking the visitors completed their comeback victory 27-25 for the two-nil set lead.
Coming into the third quarter the Pelicans seemed too relaxed and saw seven points logged for their opponents before they earned a point. St Augustine coach Saleem Ali then called a time-out which stirred up the guys because, a few spikes and clinical plays later, they had a one-point lead and they held it throughout the remainder of the set to win 25-23.
A win against Open Campus and Cave Hill defeating Mona will give St Augustine a mathematical chance of being crowned champions.
However, in the female equivalent, the Trinidad team were on the losing end to Cave Hill 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-12), a result which eliminated them from the tournament.
The Table Tennis team are hoping to defend their title when they face Mona Campus at 9 am at the Barbados Table Tennis Center today. Speaking ahead of the encounter was St Augustine skipper Ambika Sitram.
We are pretty confident because what sets us aside from other teams is the strength of our female players, she said. Our male players are undoubtedly strong but the strength of the female will pull us through because Mona has a very good male team. Top performers for St. Augustine in Athletics were: Marielle Pierre (Women`s shot put) Gold medal – 12.10 metres; Kesean Phillips (Men`s shot put) silver medal – 15.46m; Shaunna Downey (Women`s shot put) Bronze medal – 11.52 m; Danae David (Women`s 100m and 200m) Bronze medals – 12.57 seconds and 26.04 seconds respectively.
