Justice Bryan Sykes sworn in as chief justice - EntornoInteligente

Jamaica Observer / KINGSTON, Jamaica —Justice Bryan Sykes was a short while ago sworn in as Chief Justice of Jamaica.

The swearing in of Sykes marked the end of more than a month-long furore over his appointment as acting chief justice in January, which sparked fury in some circles, mainly legal.

It was argued that Prime Minister Andrew Holness erred when he recommended to the Governor General that the veteran jurist act in the post, rather than confirm him since a clear vacancy existed.

Holness had suggested that Justice Sykes’ appointment as chief justice would be dependent on his performance.

However, members of the legal fraternity were quick to point out that under Jamaica’s separation of powers, the head of the judiciary does not report to the prime minister.
