Jamaica Information / Story Highlights The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, today (March 13) passed a Resolution in support of the twinning of the City of Kingston with the City of Miramar, Florida, in the United States. The City of Miramar is home to a large Jamaican diaspora, many of whom have contributed in significant ways to the development of the city, particularly in the areas of social development, political leadership, citizen safety and security, and commerce. At the meeting of the Corporation today in downtown Kingston, Councillor for the Stony Hill Division, Tosha Schwapp, who moved the motion, stressed that there are substantial benefits that can accrue from stronger relations with Miramar.

The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, today (March 13) passed a Resolution in support of the twinning of the City of Kingston with the City of Miramar, Florida, in the United States.

According to the Resolution, both cities share deep cultural, creative and historic ties and have agreed to pursue and solidify this relationship through various initiatives such as municipal governance, youth participation and leadership, community empowerment, commercial facilitation and networking, environmental stewardship, alternative energy solutions, and local economic development.

The City of Miramar is home to a large Jamaican diaspora, many of whom have contributed in significant ways to the development of the city, particularly in the areas of social development, political leadership, citizen safety and security, and commerce.

At the meeting of the Corporation today in downtown Kingston, Councillor for the Stony Hill Division, Tosha Schwapp, who moved the motion, stressed that there are substantial benefits that can accrue from stronger relations with Miramar.

“We have so much to share, so much to learn from each other. It will provide us with an opportunity to learn best practices in disaster management and mitigation. It is a way for us to exchange our sporting activities, youth activities, art, culture, food and music,” she said, adding that the opportunities are endless.

Councillor for the Papine Division, Venesha Phillips, who seconded the motion, pointed out that integration is critical to remain buoyant in an international competitive environment.

The Resolution is to be sent to the Ministry of Local Government and Communality Development for support.

During the sitting, newly elected Councillor for the Norman Gardens Division, Jacqueline Lewis, was sworn in.
