The Office of  the Children’s Advocate (OCA) is mobilising resources to secure legal representation for children who have been detained under the State of  Emergency in St James.

Children’s Advocate Diahann Gordon Harrison has declared this a necessity in light of reports her office has received.

So far, more than 100 people have been detained  under the State of  Emergency and the number is expected to climb.

Human rights advocates and legal practitioners have expressed concern about reports of  severe overcrowding and dehumanising conditions inside the detention centres, in addition to health risks.

“The office of the Children’s Advocate became aware of this today and we have confirmed that there are in fact some minors who have been detained for questioning and are of other interest to the police,” said Gordon Harrison.

She said her office is putting together a response to provide legal representation.

“This is not to frustrate the efforts of the security forces at all but to facilitate the process in that cach person has a aright to legal represenation and also to see if we need to do an assessment of the lockups where they are being held …” said the Children’s Advocate.
