RJR News / Health Minister Dr. Fenton Ferguson has warned that the country will see an increase in cases of the Chikungunya virus before there is a lull in the number of persons contracting the mosquito borne virus. Confirmed cases have risen to 31 while there are 251 classified as suspected. However, speaking in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Dr. Ferguson expressed confidence in his Ministry’s ability to deal with the situation. He acknowledged, however, that there were some challenges associated with bringing the situation under control, “because it is a breaking-out disease.” Accordingly, he warned that “you’re going to see the numbers going up,” before there is a decline, because “it is a new disease for us.” The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Wednesday that the number of chikungunya cases in that country has passed the one thousand mark. As of September 16, there were 1,052 cases reported in 44 states. New York leads with 252. All nine locally-transmitted cases have been reported in Florida. Only Alaska, Vermont, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Utah have not reported a chikungunya case to date. Ninety-eight per cent of travel associated cases are linked to the Americas and the Caribbean, while the remainder involved persons who travelled to the Pacific Islands or Asia.
