JAMAICA: Blown out of proportion / Jamaica Gleaner / THE EDITOR, Sir:
Kindly permit me to comment on two articles regarding Chris Gayle’s flirting at the Big Bash match last week. I had kept out of this Gayle-McLaughlin kerfuffle until I read Chelan Smith’s column, ‘White beauty and the big black beast’, and Orville Higgins’ ‘I’m guilty of sexual of harassment’, both appearing in The Gleaner of January 8, 2016.
Kudos to Ms Smith’s piece, for as we used to say back in the 1970’s, ‘telling it like it is’.
Mr Higgins’ article juxtaposed Ms Smith’s but both compositions made mince meat of the misplaced outrage against Chris. Both essays agreed that the
comments by Mr Gayle were “inappropriate”, although
I would have said “tactless”, because Ms McLaughlin deserves, as a female, more chivalrous treatment.
However, I believe that, subliminally, there is something more to this encounter, to which Ms Smith’s and Mr Higgins’ articles have alluded.
But what seems to escape me is why persons in the local dispensation – I can understand those with their international ‘agendas’ – may want to ‘BLACK-ball’ Chris.
