JAMAICA: A blatant display of selfishness - EntornoInteligente

Jamaica Gleaner / THE EDITOR, Sir:

Today, I write with disgust and disappointment at what Jamaica has become. A lack of forward thinking, discipline and thoughtfulness has made us a nation of stumbling idiots.  On New Year’s Day, I drove from Mandeville to Kingston to put my husband on a flight back to the Cayman Islands. A journey we assumed would take us a little under two hours as it has countless times in the past.  We assumed wrong.

Upon reaching the Harbour View Roundabout we were greeted with double lane traffic through the roundabout and up the Palisadoes Strip. The worst display of driving and conduct continued from 5:30 p.m. until we pulled into the airport compound at 11:38 p.m. My husband’s flight was set to depart at 8 p.m.

After sitting through hours of the slowest moving traffic I’ve ever experienced, at 7 p.m. my husband decided the only way he would have any chance of making the flight would be to walk. With luggage in tow, he and a friend, who was also stuck in the gridlock, made their way up the Palisadoes Strip. I thought. I would make it to the airport in time to say goodbye and to see him off. I thought wrong.

As the hours passed the situation worsened, as I was the victim of two fender benders, the first being from a drunken partier and the second from an equally frustrated woman trying to get to the airport. In this traffic nightmare I wondered, where was the police? Who granted the permit for an event of this scale to be held along the strip? What genius thought this would be OK? Should there have been an emergency at the airport, what evacuation route would they use? Boats?

For a few hours of entertainment for revellers we held the country to hours of non-productivity, airline staff, flight crew and passengers sat helplessly in the name of Sandz. Was it worth the wait?
