Jamaica Gleaner / Gem Myers is the consummate entertainer, on her own singing the glories of the ‘One Man Woman’ or with her PaKaGe colleagues Patricia Edwards and Karen Smith; in the intimate setting of a cabaret show or owning the big stage of an outdoor concert. She can project her voice high and long – very long – and take it down to a whisper, handling multiple genres with vocal comfort and fluid movement. Myers helped the revellers welcome 2016 at the Hilton Hose Hall in Montego Bay and is looking forward to another good year.
What is the longest you have held a note while performing?
I have been told 45 seconds. I have not timed it. It varies with the mood and where the show is going. If you get caught up in the moment the audience will give you a push. If the audience is behind you, you go a little bit more.
When was the last time you were not performing on New Year’s Eve?
That would probably be 15 years ago. This time I was at the Hilton Rose Hall with my group PaKaGe. The band took over at 10 minutes to midnight. I would be foolish not to want to work on New Year’s Eve.
Do you have any special plans for 2018?
I think I need to get back to recording. It is time. I have been on the road for a while. The road is where I make my money, but bring something new. The fans want something new. I have done a few one-off things. I would love to do an album, but I would release a few singles first.
Is there a big difference between how you dress off-stage and when you are performing?
Off-stage I like it ‘easy-breezy’ – long dresses. I like the glamour look on stage. That would be gowns and jump-suits in a glamorous way. You feel dressed up for the stage. I like that. With hair, off-stage it is Nubian knots and Afro. On stage I will glam it up a bit. In terms of hair colour I like highlights. I like a mixture, especially on stage.
Which singer, alive or dead, you would have liked to or would like to do a song with?
Luther Vandross. Luther coulda sing. Beres as well. He has a lot of soul. Him sing from him heart.
