The Trinidad Guardian / T&T footballers, winger Levi Garcia and former national striker, Darryl Roberts both netted opening goals to lead their respective clubs to much needed victories on the weekend.

Playing in the Holland Eredivisie on Saturday, Garcia, on loan from AZ Alkmaar to Excelsior since the January transfer window opened the scoring for his new club in a 3-2 defeat of VVV Venlo.

The speedy Garcia, T&T’s youngest ever goalscorer in World Cup qualification matches banged in the opening goal in the 35th minute, only for Venlo to draw level six minutes later courtesy an own goal from Jurgen Mettheij.

Excelsior then made a big stride towards all three points when Hicham Faik (61st) and Mike Van Duinen (81st) netted in the second-half for a 3-1 advantage before Lennart Thy got a second for Venlo six minutes from full-time to make things interesting.

Excelsior managed to hang on for victory and improved to 35 points from 27 matches, five off of the final European qualification play-off spot held by PEC Zwolle.

Garcia and his team-mates will look to continue their push for the playoffs when they meet ADO Den Haag, eighth with 36 points, the same as Heracles tomorrow.

IN ASIA

Discarded T&T forward Roberts headed home Philippines’ Global Cebul FC’s first goal in the 79th minute in a 2-1 win over Yangon United in the AFC Champions Cup Group C Match Day Four clash.

The win lifted Global to four points from as many matches, level with its next opponent on April 11, FLC Thanh Hoa.

Meanwhile, national midfielder Khaleem Hyland and his Suadia Arabian club, Al Faisaly slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Dhofar on Tuesday.

Despite the loss, Al Faisaly still head the four-team table with seven points after four matches, just one ahead of Al Ansar.

Al Faisaly also suffered a narrow defeat, 2-1 against Al Fateh FC on Saturday in the Saudia Arabian Premier League and dropped to fifth on the standings with 34 points from 24 matches.

IN GERMANY

In the 2nd Bundesliga, national utility player, Joevin Jones played the full 90 minutes in SV Darmstadt 1-1 draw with Ingolstadt.

The share of points did little to help Darmstadt’s fight to survive relegation as it remained 17th of 18 clubs with 27 points from 26 matches, three more than cellar-placed Kaiserslautern, while Erzgebirge is 16th with 30, one adrift of the safety spot held by Bochum.

On Sunday, Jones, who joined the club in January will be in action again second placed Nurenberg, which has 45 points, five behind leaders.

IN TURKEY

T&T hopeful John Bostock, formerly of Tottenham Hotspurs and RC Lens continues to find the going tough with new club Bursaspor in the Turkish Super League.

This after a 2-1 loss at the hands off Osmnalispor, its third in five matches, saw Bostock’s club dropped to 12th on the 18-club standings with 30 points from 25 matches, six above the relegation zone.

IN SLOVAKIA

T&T defender Keston Julien was an un-used substitute in Trencin’s similar 2-1 loss at leaders Spartak Tmava in the six-team Championship Playoffs.
