Curacao Chronicle / THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD – The Undersecretary of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Raymond Knops reiterates that the Netherlands does not provide financial aid when Venezuelans leave their country en masse and come to Aruba and Curaçao. The Undersecretary sees the Venezuelan refugee problem as a matter of the islands themselves. The islands have to provide their own funding to solve this problem.
Some of these problems could be housing for the refugees and also the costs of deportation for those who did not get the status of refugee on the islands.
The islands had hoped for support from The Hague. The Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath even stated in a recent interview that he will request funds from the Netherlands to help Curaçao with this problem. But Knops indicated the Netherlands will only provide expertise if the islands make this request.
