JAMAICA: Holy Trinity to pump more resources into Manning Cup

Jamaica Gleaner / Principal of Holy Trinity High, Margaret Brissett-Bolt, has vowed to provide more resources for the school's Manning Cup team in order to bring glory to the institution.

"I am extremely proud of the team. It was a rough road, but they worked hard. Even in the semi-final they went down fighting as the other team (Jamaica College) had to come good," Brissett-Bolt told The Gleaner during an appreciation function for the football team after their second consecutive third place finish in the Manning Cup. The function was held inside the school's auditorium.

"They have come to be better students. These are some guys from difficult communities and circumstances and to see them rally around each other and become a team made me proud. They have helped to put Holy Trinity on the map. Holy Trinity was a school that was not doing well, and has found a niche in something," she said.

"It's not just football as they have to work on the academics as well.

We want them to achieve scholarships in the future," she added.

Punching above weight "With little resources, the team has done well, so I am hoping that the private sector can come on board to give support to the football programme. We have the talent but don't have enough resources to reach the top. It is a real struggle," the principal revealed.

"I don't know how we would manage without Dr Andre McDonald (CEO of Suretime Medical). He has taken over the boys especially medically. We also have Leighton Walters who is a family friend," she shared about the main supporters of the football programme.

"We also have an excellent coach. We can't give him what he wants but he is dedicated to Holy Trinity.

"I know that other schools are after him, but he has a passion for the school and that has kept him here.

We are going for it next year. My chairman (Tony Lewars) whispered in my ear before he left that we have to find more resources next year. I am putting my head on the block to find more resources. We are definitely going for it next year," she concluded.

Holy Trinity's head coach, Devon 'Pablo' Anderson said the show of appreciation was long in coming.

"'I waited for this from we played in the Super Cup final (in 2014). We are pleased to know that the school appreciated the boys the way they should," Anderson disclosed.

"I am disappointed with not winning a trophy. My expectation was to win at least one trophy. In that regard I underachieved. I know that this year's unit could have done much better than third place

"Now, I have to go back to the foundation and start building again for next year's Manning Cup. That is what I am good at, I am a builder,' he added.
