Christopher Zacca was elected to the council of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica on Wednesday, and is almost certain to be selected president in another two weeks unless a challenger emerges. The five companies that Zacca intends to propose as candidates for positions on the PSOJ officer corps on July 19 are now council members − four of them were elected at Wednesday's annual general meeting of the PSOJ, while the fifth is serving the second of its two−year tenure.Zacca's slate of candidates has the support of outgoing president Joseph Matalon, who in his June 25 letter to PSOJ members endorsing Zacca, had also solicited support for the nominees for the executive team.Matalon's letter identified them as GraceKennedy Limited, Sagicor Life Jamaica and Jamaica Money Market Brokers represented by Don Wehby, Richard Byles and Keith Duncan, respectively, as vice−presidents; Scotia Group Jamaica Limited represented by Jacqueline Sharp as treasurer; and the Gleaner Company in the second of its two−year tenure, represented by managing director Chris Barnes as secretary.Zacca said his slate of nominees remain the same and would be officially nominated at the July 19 meeting where the vote will occur. He said he does not anticipate a challenge of the executive nominees ahead of the vote, although the rules allow it.The other six companies elected to the council on Wednesday were Musson Jamaica Limited, Wisynco Group, Jamaica Producers Group, Appliance Traders Limited, Citigroup Jamaica and National Continental Bakery. There was initially a tie in the votes between National Continental Bakery Limited and Pan Caribbean Financial Services Limited, but PanCaribbean, which is a subsidiary of Sagicor Life Jamaica, opted to pull out at the very last minute rather than have the members vote again and create a split.Zacca was elected to the council in one of the five seats assigned to individual members.Zacca preiously served as PSOJ president between 2006 and 2009.marcella.scarlett@gleanerjm.com
