Mekelle going for glory

The trinidad Guardian / Focussed and determined, 11-year-old Mekelle Cedeno is aiming to stand atop the podium at the Carifta Triathlon Championship in Barbados, on October 7 and 8.

Cedeno speaks Spanish fluently and with good reason, as she was born in Venezuela. Her mother is Venezuelian and her father, a Trinidadian.

She has been swimming since the age of five as a member of Marlins Swim Club in Diego Martin, where she started swimming competitively two years ago and is ranked in the top ten in her age group.

But Cedeno has recently found a new interest which is Multi-sport and she will fly the red, white and black flag on the international stage.

As a student of St Monica's Preparatory School, Cedeno has participated and performed well at several school swimming meets before her new passion was ignited with her entry into the Atlantic Schools Aquathlon in November 2016 where she recorded a fourth place finish. Aquathlon is a growing sport that combines running and swimming into one race.

Following that, Cedeno then showed interest and began taking part duathlon (running/cycling/running) before changing her focus and graduating to combining all three discipline, known as triathlon.

She joined the Giants team with Coach Angelo Clark in May, 2017 and participated at Rainbow Cup in Tobago. With just two months of training she placed second and hailed it as a fantastic achievement.

Her improvement has been phenomenal leading her to be pre-selected by the T&T Triathlon Federation for T&T national team to the Carifta event in Barbados where she hopes to represent T&T in the 11-12 age group. Cedeno's said: "My goal for this competition is to mount the podium, make my parents, family, coach and team very proud. I would also like to make the Carifta team again and represent my country, T&T.

Much more than a talented athlete, Mekelle is also a top student at her school. Her academic goals are to do well in the 2018 SEA Examination and and achieving placement to St. Joseph's Convent, Port of Spain.

This ambition is not by coincidence as the school boasts one of the best school Triathlon teams in the country.
