JAMAICA: Opposition says government's inaction contributed to weekend floods

Jamaica Gleaner / The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) is chastising the government over its failure to effect flood mitigation measures in the aftermath of the May rains.

The PNP says the tardiness of the government is the cause of repeated flooding in several Clarendon communities, as well as the Mandeville town centre in Manchester over the weekend.

Opposition spokesman on Local Government and Community Development, Noel Arscott, says the government is continuing to ignore calls for the release of emergency funding to clean drains, water channels and gullies to mitigate against damage to infrastructure and property as well as loss of lives.

The Member of Parliament for Clarendon south western says the failure to respond to the plight of the residents is evident in many of the same communities that were affected earlier as flood waters once again reached dangerous levels, cutting off access to many areas.

He says areas such as Toll Gate, Four Paths, Milk River, Water Lane and Kemp?s Hill  in Clarendon are severely affected making it is unsafe for regular vehicles to operate.
